How To Acquire: The Lamp is the first item you will receive, even before a sword. After you leave your bed, open the chest inside your house to receive the Lamp. If you choose to not get the chest inside your house then the first treasure chest you open will contain the Lamp. The contents of other early treasure chests are rearranged based on when you pick up the Lamp. There is no benefit to waiting to get the Lamp, and you cannot finish Hyrule Castle without it.
Uses: The Lamp is most often used to light torches. This is the only way to light torches until you complete the Skull Woods, where you receive the Fire Rod. Once you have the Fire Rod, there is no reason to continue using the Lamp to light torches.
The Lamp also allows you to see in dark rooms. This secondary feature does not require that the Lamp be equipped. If you enter a dark room or cave then the Lamp will automatically provide a small lit area to help you find your way around. There are not many areas in the game where this feature is used, but many of the areas that require it are visited many times (specifically, the caves on Death Mountain).
